overall artist statement

In this class I have been working a lot with playfulness. I focused on the idea of struggling with who you are.  These ideas have shown through my work in my animation, the 14-day project, through the 100 images, the self-portrait, and the space project.  In the animation I showed this by symbolizing the loss of innocence and changing that you are and dealing with temptation.  In the 14-day project I showed this by showing a little snap shot into someone’s live by the contents of their pockets and rooms.  In the 100 images I showed the person in a costume and without their body and face.  This demonstrates that the people are trying to hide who they are.  In the self-portrait I showed this by blurring myself because I don’t know who I am completely. In the space project this is evident because there are all these thoughts and memories floating around in you head and they make you who you are whether or not you know it.

Self Portrait

In this piece I wanted to have the idea of looking for your self or not knowing who you are.  So I chose to execute that idea by making myself blurry. I wanted to manipulate the background to imply that you don’t know where you are going.  I chose to manipulate it in many different parts.  I did this because I wanted to show that there were multiple paths you could take and they all can look different, or have different outcomes.

Chapter 3 response

Digital art has changed and developed into something that was not initially thought to be possible.  Digital art can take on the appearance of traditional techniques like painting, drawing, and sculpture.  Digital art developed from ideas about artificial intelligence, data mapping and aesthetics, and the idea of identity. It is common for digital works to relate back to the outside world and reality because for example, when we manipulate an image it comes from the outside world.
When talking about artificial intelligence in digital art it doesn’t mean technology over taking mans place in the world but rather the ability of artist to take data and put it into a program or an algorithm and creating something that is totally random creating a piece that seems to have no reference to being created by the hand of the artist.
The Internet and technology has made the idea of being in more than one place a reality.  Because of the networking and social sites you can “be in two places at once.”
The idea of identity has changed dramatically through the digital media because of the creation of an avatar especially in video games. People are starting to have a digital identity as well as a physical one.
Gaming has also opened up a new door for digital art.  Because of the high demand of new video games it creates a high demand for digital artists to create the graphics and the characters and the ability to create an alternate reality.

Samuel Beckett, “Not I”

When I first waked to the exhibit I walked past the explanation not knowing what to expect.  At first when I walked into the pitch-black room it was disorienting.  You could not see anything you were in complete darkness; it was like a loss of space, and almost an alternate reality. Then I saw the mouth on the black screen I didn’t understand what was going on.  All I could hear was talking and taking, I could not tell if there was a beginning or an end.  I did not understand what the woman was saying or if she was even speaking in English.  But then I started focusing on the mouth. It was shocking the single light in the whole room. The white teeth and the light lips were very striking against the black back ground.  Sitting in the room for a while I started being able to comprehend the words she was saying bits and pieces of the story and what she was saying.  I started feeling the desperation of her voice in her voice and it was almost like being placed in that dark room I could almost imagine being in her shoes feeling what she was feeling.  It felt like I was trapped and I could not escape the moment like she could not escape the moment of what she was talking about.  When she said the word insentient it was almost how that room made you feel.  Like you couldn’t feel you were incapable of feeling all you could think about was what she was saying and all you could look at was the mouth moving. When other people walked in the room it was almost like in an interruption breaking me away from my memorization and how it was almost like they were walking into my shell. It was almost like the room became cozier like no one else could hear what she was saying like her thoughts became my thoughts.   It was like the other people who walked in were trying to get into my head also.  When it was over and I came out of the room it was like coming back into the real world, like I could not be alone in my own head with my own thoughts any more.  I read the sign in about the exhibit when I came out.  I was correct about some things she was saying and about how she went through something terrible happened in her life.  I could feel her terror and her sorrow and how she would try to put everything out of her mind and sometimes she would remember and it would be all she could think about.  That’s almost how the room felt like it was all you could think about and even after you could not get the image of that mouth out of your head.  The words that stood out to me the most were suffering, sin, punishment, foolish, flash, brain, buzzing.  These words added to the tension and the feeling of helplessness of the room and the piece.  It was like punishment revisiting that traumatic event for her and she could not escape it.  It was part of her suffering, not being able to escape these terrible memories.  As it was sinking in I think that she was sexually assaulted by someone she knew who she was close to.  I think that she was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.  In this time with this society, she probably could not tell anybody.  She was utterly alone.  This is how I felt in the room, utterly alone, alone with these thoughts.  It is almost like she could not control her brain from thinking about this event.  We usually think of the brain as something that we can control but in her life she could not control this, she could not control her brain from thinking about this even and she could not get away from it.  In this room you could not get away from the mouth you could not get away from the things she was saying.  You could not control your brain from drawing you into the words she was saying and how the mouth was moving.  The room was encompassing and the way they set up the exhibit was very fitting for what the woman was talking about.  The exhibit was very effective in what she was saying and how the piece made you feel.  The piece would not leave your mind and effected how you felt and was something that changes how you see things.
